Demand for gypsy sites under scrutiny

5

DEMAND for gypsy and traveller caravan sites in Warrington and across the North West generally is to come under the microscope.
A major consultation is to take place across the region to help update policies relating to the accommodation needs for gypsies, travellers and travelling show people communities.
Car parking standards will also come under scrutiny.
Consultation documents and further information is now available for review at Warrington Central Library.
The information will remain there for 12 weeks during which time members of the public will be invited to feedback their views on these subjects.
The consultation is being coordinated by 4NW – the designated regional planning body for the North West.
4NW have also prepared the North West Plan, a regional plan that has to be taken into account when decisions are being made about planning applications.
Gypsy caravan sites – legal and illegal – have caused numerous problems in the Warrington area.
Attempts by planners to stop gypsies setting up permanent sites – such as the ones at Cartridge Lane, Grappenhall and at Higher Walton – have failed because lawyers acting on behalf of the travellers have been able to argue that the borough council has not made provision for travelling people in the borough.
Only last week, a group of travellers were moved on from several sites at Appleton only to pitch camp a short distance away.
More details of the new consultation are available from www.northwestplanpartialreview.org.uk/

  1. What a perfect example of the stupidity of political correctness and liberalism. ‘Travellers’ is just a euphenism for bums, thieves and wasterels. The law gone mad is what it is. Give them short shrift and if they stop moving on the way through town, give them the bums rush. When they pay some taxes, then thay can make some demands, which, of course should never be met.

  2. Wouldn’t it be better to hold MAJOR consultations in other ‘more local’ locations over a period of time (maybe all other local libaries / centres etc ) rather than in ONE location which is rarely used by some.

Guess that’s wrong with consultations these days 🙁

I presume 4NW are aslo going to write to every resident in the North West to advise them that their opinions are required for this and the North West Plan…. just incase they don’t read about it in the local press 🙂

  4. I appreciate that everyone is entitled to their opinion, however I find your comments alarming and uneducated. People from all walks of life are entitled to a home. It is the responsibility of the local council to ensure they cater for everyone, regardless of race, creed etc. I am speaking on behalf of the travelling showmens community.

These people are hard working, self employed people who do pay taxes. As their way of life is different from the settled community and they are a minority they find it difficult to get planning permission passed because they are misunderstood.

Showmen would like to own their own homes like the majority of people. They are very proud and do not want the council to pay for a site, they just want the opportunity to purchase and gain the necessary permission fairly.

I have lived in Warrington all my life and think it is time more provision was made.

  5. Sorry, but I’ve just about had enough of the travellers and their detritus–eg: excrement in bushes, old tyres, bin bags full of rotting food etc. etc. No enough is enough. If the travellers make an encampment in Warrington, they should be moved on immediately and failure to do so should result in property being seized to pay for the ‘clean ups’ that are needed after their illegal camping. I really don’t pay council tax to line the pockets of travellers. Furthermore, I think money set aside for transit camps would be better spent improving our own neighborhoods.
