Key sites for creating jobs

TWO sites in Warrington have been identified on a list of 13 priority employment sites across sub-region that could help to create jobs in the future.
They are Birchwood Park, Parcel 7 and Woolston Grange. The other 11 are in Chester, Crewe, Ellesmere Port, Northwich, Handforth, Middlewich and Winsford.
Commissioned by Cheshire and Warrington Economic Alliance (CWEA) in conjunction with the North West Development Agency, the study’s aim was to assess and identify sub-regionally significant employment land and sites which, along with the forthcoming Employment Land Reviews, will add to the evidence base for the new Cheshire local authorities’ planning policies and strategies.
Sites across Cheshire and Warrington were studied based on different economic outcomes from the current recession and on commercial market assessment. The sites were scored by specific criteria based on their potential to create new businesses and jobs, their attractiveness to the market and the constraints which must be overcome for their development.
John Risk, strategy and intelligence manager for CWEA, who led the study said: “Given the current economic slowdown, demand for new employment land is likely to be limited but it is really important that we start planning now for long-term investment in sites that have the potential to meet economic growth in the future and to create jobs for local people.”
Paul Lakin, director land and property at the NWDA, said: “This is a comprehensive study which will help to direct future development and growth in the sub-region. These sites represent opportunities for Cheshire and Warrington where new jobs and business can be created.”
Working closely with Cheshire West and Chester Council, Cheshire East Council and Warrington Borough Council, the findings will now be fed into the Local Development Framework (LDF) for each area. The study also makes recommendations as to what interventions and investment are required by the public sector to help in bringing these sites forward for development.
The study also identifies further sites which should be carefully monitored in the future as having the potential to be important employment areas. Two of these are in Warrington – Calver Road at Winwick Quay and the Fiat site off Winwick Road.
