Council fights driving circuit plan

APPLETON Parish Council had lodged objections to new proposals for a driving circuit on part of the former Stretton Airfield.
Members fear the development, which it is believed will create an extra 641 vehicle movements a day on local roads, would cause traffic chaos on already overloaded roads.
They say Barleycastle Road is already carrying traffic, including heavy lorries, far beyond its capacity.
Councillors also believe the development could have a noise impact on Appleton Thorn – particularly Appleton Thorn Primary School.
The plan, submitted by Richard Coe of Appleton Autodrome Ltd., proposes a driving circuit in association with a driving academy and a leisure motor sports centre which, the parish council believes, would be an in appropriate development in the Green Belt.
As the site falls partly in the area of Cheshire East Council and partly within Warrington Borough, the objection will be sent to both authorities.

  1. Ideal place for something like this. What’s wrong with people these days? Did they complain about the noise impact when they built the motorway? That creates far more noise.

A couple of miles away they have (used to have) Jalopy Racing. I bet that wasn’t quiet.

  2. Isn’t it mainly industrial use around there ? There are some houses but like Peter T also says there is the motorway with traffic noise 25/7.

Surely a simple driving circuit and driving accademy wont really attract 641 vehicles per day…. but given the lack of skills by some of the drivers on our roads maybe a local driving acadamy or way to let off a bit of steam is a GOOD idea. I think it sounds quite good and if the prices are sensible I might have a go myself.

I’ve not seen the actual plans though and am only making my comments based on various press reports 🙂

  3. The noise limit threshold was reduced from the initial plan submission to 96dB. That is the same as a petrol lawn mower. Would you object to the grass being cut on the airfield? Also, EU legislation has road car noise limit of less than 76dB.

Very poor appreciation of the maths for multiple noise sources – it is NOT e.g. 8 times 96db (worst case since it was stated at a presentation max 8 vehicles out at any time) it equals about 105 dB. Also, noise reduces by 6 dB every doubling of distance. Assuming the readings are at 1 metre by 500m the en masse lawnmowers are at normal conversation level. If normal cars it would be far far less.

What you hear from the motorway is more tyre roar, driven by the huge volume vs the low number on the proposed circuit.

Re. traffic volume, the plan had 150 parking spaces, so it must be assuming two half day change overs, every day, which would not be true if the presentation stating manufacturer testing was a big user (e.g. Bentley). Also, what is the total of vehicle movements now? Pointless giving a number without that comparison.
