TWO thugs – one armed with an axe – tried to rob a petrol station at Warrington this afternoon.
The robbery was at the Oakwood Gate service station at Birchwood at about 12.15pm.
Two men wearing black balaclavas entered the service station, one brandishing the axe, and attacked to men employed by a security firm who were inside.
There was a struggle during which the offenders tried to grab a cashbox. But eventually they made off, running along Ordnance Avenue towards Forbes Close.
The two security men, aged 24 and 52, suffered minor injuries during the struggle but did not require hospital treatment.
One of the offenders was wearing grey tracksuit bottoms with a dark top and the other was dressed all in black. Both men wore gloves and spoke with local accents.
Police are anxious to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the robbery or have seen the two men making off along Ordnance Avenue afterwards. Anyone who can help should call DC Darren Wright on 01244 613831 or the confidential Crimestoppers line 0800 555 111.
