Training for school meals assistants

AN innovative new programme of training for school mid-day assistants has been piloted by Warrington’s school meals catering services.
More than 50 assistants from nine schools in the borough completed the training which was devised by the University of Hull.
Warrington along with Barnsley is testing the training on behalf of the School Food Trust, which if successful may be rolled out across the country.
Feedback so far from those who have completed the training has been very positive.
The main aim of the training was and is to provide strategies for them to use and to support them in their role.
The training was funded by the School Food Trust and looked at getting the most out of lunchtime at school.
Coun Sheila Woodyatt, executive member for children’s services said: “Lunchtimes are an important and often overlooked part of the school day. Many of our mid day assistants are parents themselves. Historically they have received very little formal training but from now on I am pleased to say that will change. Our staff will now be better equipped to deal with any situation that may arise.”
Chris Wainwright of the School Food Trust said: “Congratulations to all the midday assistants who recently completed this training in Warrington. The School Food Trust’s School FEAST Network actively encourages training courses, such as this one, so that the entire school food workforce has the opportunities to develop the skills, confidence and inspiration to do a difficult job even better.”
Participating schools in Warrington were: Alderman Bolton, Grappenhall Heys, Latchford CE, Our Lady’s, St Augustines, Broomfields, Appleton Thorn, Grappenhall St Wilfrid’s and Cobbs Infant School.
