Historic uniform saved for posterity

A HISTORIC uniform worn by a long serving officer in the former United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority Constabulary at Risley – now the Civil Nuclear Constabulary – has been handed over to the force for posterity.
The late Acting Sergeant Harry Holden, of Culcheth, served from 1967 to 1981. Now his widow Dorothy, 92, has donated his uniform, last notebook and commendations to the CNC for safekeeping.
It was collected by CNC Assistant Chief Constable Alan Cooper from Dorothy at the Civil Nuclear Police Authority headquarters at Risley.
Dorothy still lives in Culcheth near her late husband’s “beat.”
Their daughter Jean Colwell said: “Dad loved his job and Mum thought it would be a fitting memory of him for his uniform to be looked after by the force he served.”
ACC Cooper said: “I am delighted to have been able to collect this important part of the CNC’s history which will be treasured for ever and go on show at our headquarters in Oxfordshire. It is a symbol of the dedicated service of all our officers, past and present.”
Harry, PC 25, served throughout his career at Risley where he won two commendations from the Chief Constable.
He was awarded the Police Long Service and Good Conduct medal in recognition of his “long and meritorious service” in 1980.
Harry served in the East Lancashire Regiment during the Second World War. Before joining UKAEA force he was an officer in the British Transport Police and later a stalwart of the Royal British Legion in Culcheth.
He died, aged 85, in November 2001.
