Man escapes flat fire

A MAN escaped unharmed from his smoke-filled home after a smoke alarm alerted him to a fire in his living room.
The blaze was at a flat in Helsby Street, Warrington.
Extensive damage was caused in the living room before fire crews, wearing breathing apparactus, extinguished the flames using two hosereels. Two fire appliances were involved in the operation.
A fire service spokesman said the fire would have been much more serious but for the smoke alarm activating.
*In a separate incident, fire crews were called to Knutsford Road, Warrington when a pile of newspapers left outside a newsagents’ shop were set alight by vandals.
