Jobs in Manchester 2018 – which industries are thriving in the city?

0

As one of the largest cities in the UK, it is little surprise that there’s a wide range of job opportunities in Manchester.

As the birthplace of the industrial revolution of the 18th and 19th centuries, it has a long and proud manufacturing history – but the employment market has evolved and diversified significantly since the days of cotton and textile mills, and artist LS Lowry’s paintings of matchstick men and women. In fact, many of the factories stand as little more than monuments to the past as the job market has moved with the times.

If you work in any of these industries, then Manchester and the surrounding regions could be a prime destination if you are looking to take the next step in your career.

Digital and media

There is a long and proud media heritage in the region and Manchester plays host to a number of leading media organisations. The BBC famously moved a large part of its operation to MediaCityUK in nearby Salford in 2011 and a number of media outlets are set to follow suit in the coming years.

The digital landscape is also thriving in the city. ManchesterDigital is the trace organisation for digital businesses in the entire North West of England and represents the ever-growing number of digital first organisations in the region. It is estimated that the tech and digital sectors in the city employ about 85,000 people, putting it in a good place to compete with some of the biggest tech cities in Europe. It is a hotspot for tech start-ups and many professionals in the space are moving to Manchester to capitalise on the opportunities.

Logistics

The logistics sector also plays a large role in the jobs landscape of Manchester. Well connected by numerous motorways (more than any other UK city) and a major international airport, Manchester is something of a hub connecting much of the rest of the UK. As such, a number of major domestic and international logistics firms are based in the area. Many global giants such as Adidas and P&G have distribution hubs here employing a significant number of logistics professionals.

Construction

The widespread and continuing regeneration of large parts of Manchester and the surrounding areas means that the construction industry here has been in rude health for some time. Manchester City Council, with backing from the government, is aiming to continue to develop the city as a place of national and international significance with a view of increasing investment in the area and further bolstering the local economy. This is sure to keep the constructions firms in the area busy.

A global city

These days, Manchester is home to the global or European headquarters for a number of large, UK and global companies, with the likes of the Brother, Kellogg’s, Umbro and Etihad Airways basing their operations in the city. Head offices of global organisations such as these employ a large number of people in a wide range of functions and given the scope of their operations are a desirable employer for professionals in the city and beyond.

This is by no means all that Manchester has to offer, merely a snapshot of some industries that are thriving in the area. So why not search for jobs in Manchester now and see for yourself what all the hype is really about?
