Veteran Orford councillor calls for Waste Transfer Site plan to be withdrawn

VETERAN Orford councillor Mike Hannon is hoping “common sense will prevail” over controversial plans for a Waste Transfer Site on Winwick Road, Warrington.

Fearing the proposal will blight the local area Cllr Hannon says he is still working “behind the scenes” to get the planning application, being proposed by the borough council, withdrawn before it gets to committee on June 27.

“I have nothing against the need for this facility but this is not the right site. I am hoping common sense will prevail and the application is withdrawn.

“There is simply not the infrastructure in place and it is completely the wrong location on the already congested Winwick Road,” he said. “This plan needs to be taken back to the drawing board and withdrawn.”

Meanwhile the campaign against the Waste Transfer Site on the A49 Winwick Road has attracted nearly 1,000 objectors on a petition.

Local councillor Morgan Tarr and Warrington North MP Helen Jones, have submitted the petition to Warrington Borough Council’s planning department ahead of the application being considered by the Development Management Committee on June 27.

It has attracted support from residents across the town, as well as local Borough and Parish Councillors.

Cllr Tarr said: “Just short of 1,000 people have signed our petition objecting to the waste transfer site on the A49 and we have been overwhelmed with the response from the local community. The site is completely unsuitable for this development and the council have done little to alleviate the concerns which have been raised throughout this process. The council must recognise the strength of feeling from local residents, recognise the clear problems with this proposal, and withdraw the application immediately.”

Helen  added: “We have had a fantastic response to our petition objecting to the waste transfer site and residents have sent a strong message to the council. Local residents, some of whom will live in very close proximity to the site, are right to be concerned about the impact this will have on the area. The A49 suffers from significant traffic congestion as it is and this site will only make the problem worse. Concerns have also been raised regarding air-quality, noise pollution and vermin. The sheer volume of objectors tells a story in itself and I hope the council will listen to local residents.”

Residents who wish to add their name to the objections still have the chance to do so by visiting WarringtonNorthLabour.com or contact Cllr Tarr directly via email to [email protected].
