SUE Hooton, assistant director of governance, performance and patient safety with Warrington-based 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust, has been awarded the OBE for her services to nursing.
Based at Hollins Park, Winwick, she has been with the Trust for three years.
Sue (pictured) became a nurse in 1977, at Alder Hey Children’s Hospital in Liverpool and has spent most of her career working in children’s nursing. She has also been heavily involved in educating future generations of nurses and midwives, including a national role with the English National Board for Nursing, Midwifery and Health Visiting, in the late nineties.
Sue has also played a key role in the development, quality and safety of children’s services in Africa, within her role offering professional leadership to a Kenyan children’s hospital – the only one in East Africa.
Sue is now helping Kenyan nurses gain degrees in children’s nursing and all of the nurses have become good friends, with both Sue and her family.
She said: “I am absolutely delighted to have been awarded an OBE and I’m really looking forward to a day out in London to collect the award. It’s such an honour for both me and my family, who have always been really supportive of my career. I have been privileged to enjoy an interesting and varied career over the years and I think I have made a valuable difference to people’s lives.”
Trust chairman Bernard Pilkington said: “Sue is a really deserving recipient of such an award and everyone here at the Trust is thrilled for her. Her work both in the NHS and in Kenya has made a real difference to people’s lives.”
Sue will attend Buckingham Palace with her husband, mother and daughter to receive the award.
The 5 Boroughs Partnership NHS Trust provides a range of mental health services across the boroughs of Warrington, Halton, Knowsley, St Helens and Wigan – a population of almost one million people.
