BIRCHWOOD residents rallied when motorists were stranded in the heat following a serious road traffic collision on the M62.

Traffic came to a standstill for several hours following a collision between two vehicles on the eastbound carriageway between junction 10 at Croft and 11 at Birchwood at around 5pm, today.

The carriageway was closed in both directions while an air ambulance attended at the scene to take one casualty to hospital.

The eastbound carriageway remained closed for several hours with motorists, many with young children, left stranded in the heat in the Bank Holiday traffic.

As a result Birchwood residents, using social media, rallied, taking bottles of water to stranded motorists.

One local resident said: “It was an amazing response from the local community at Birchwood following the incident on the M62.

“Local residents have been buying water and taking it to people stuck in the traffic jam.

“The sterling efforts of the local community have made me very proud tonight.”

Most of the trapped traffic was reported to have been released by 21.30.

  1. I hope the person airlifted is going to be ok and anyone else who was injured in the crash is ok too.
A huge well done to all the residents who went to give out water etc to the motorists stuck in the heat and traffic standstill. Nice thing to do that and I’m sure it was appreciated by many 😀
A huge well done to the emergency services too.

  2. My family was one of many stuck in this yesterday and I for one would like to say thank you to each and every person who took their time out to help us. From the many bottles of water handed out to the crisps and sweets for my children. One small boy even handed my two boys a couple of yoghurts. Thank you all so much you truly are amazing people. ❤

  3. I was stuck in this yesterday and was blown away by the generosity of local residents. We were all so grateful for the water and crisps being handed out, I’m super proud to live in the North West.
