Shopping centre's £100,000 pledge

A WARRINGTON shopping centre has pledged to raise £100,000 in the next 12 months to help the local community.
Warrington Grassroots launched its collection box scheme in Golden Square Shopping Centre – and centre staff have pledged their support.
Centre marketing manager Ian Cox said: “The Warrington Grassroots Endowment Challenge allows us to benefit many community groups rather than one particular cause.
“The scheme issues grants from between £250 to £5,000 to local voluntary, community and faith groups. The scheme has two elements, the current grant giving and the challenge which receives match-funding from the Government to allow the scheme to continue after 2011.”
Nigel Bacon, chief executive of Warrington Council for Voluntary Service (CVS) which runs the scheme, said collection boxes are a good way of raising cash and he encouraged Warrington people to give.
Currently, the organisation was able to give grants until March 2011 – and the fund needed to be expanded so that grants could be given after that date.
He added: “The Government has given us an additional incentive as we are able to claim match-funding on donations to the fund, so we are looking to work with other businesses too.”
Anyone who wants more information about the fund should contact the CVS on 01925 246880 or visit www.warringtoncvs.org.uk
