POLICE and fire service chiefs today appealed to the public not to swim in reservoirs following a drowning tragedy at Warrington.
The body of a 16-year-old boy was recovered from Appleton Reservoir yesterday after a three-hour search.
Emergency services were called to the reservoir after the boy had been seen to jump into the water and then disappear.
Fire crews used a rescue boat but the body was eventually recovered by a police underwater search team.
The boy’s identity has not been revealed.
A police spokesman said: “We would appeal to people NOT to go swimming in reservoirs.
“They can be very tempting on hot days, but because of the nature of reservoirs the water can be extremely cold, even when the weather is hot and this can lead to even strong swimmers getting into difficulty.
“If you want to go swimming – go to the swimming baths.”
