Town to close recycling banks

WARRINGTON is to close nine recycling banks – because of the success of the borough council’s kerbside blue bin recycling scheme.
Most of the banks to be removed cater for glass – and the council stresses there will still be large network of recycling bring sites across the borough for residents to use.
The three main community recycling centres – Gatewarth, Stockton Heath and Woolston – will not be affected.
In little more than six months, the enhanced blue bin recycling scheme has resulted in 10,000 tonnes of waste being collected – the same weight as the Eiffel Tower.
Coun Alan Litton (pictured), the council’s executive member for environment said: “We have reached this landmark target much sooner than anticipated and such is the success of the blue bins that a number of recycling bring sites are hardly being used at all.
“The tonnage through these sites has dropped so dramatically that is now time to remove some of the poorest performing sites.
“There will however still be a large network of banks for residents to use and the three community recycling centres will not be affected.”
The banks to be removed are: Grange Sports Club, Westy (glass and card); Thelwall British Legion, Stockport Road (glass); Warrington Sports Club, Walton Lea Road (glass); Saracens Head Pub, Wilderspool Causeway (glass); Kings Club, Latchford (glass); IKEA, Westbrook (glass only to be removed – all other facilities to stay); Padgate Community Centre (glass); Ryfield Village, Orford (glass); Dog and Partridge, Manchester Road (glass).
