HEALTHCARE workers past and present gathered together at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery to celebrate the launch of a fascinating exhibition.
“The Health Revolution” opened its doors with a special preview for members of the healthcare community.
The exhibition takes a look back over 70 years of world class healthcare by exploring the history of the NHS in Warrington.
Maureen Banner, chairman of Culture Warrington – the charity that runs Warrington Museum and Art Gallery and Pyramid and Parr Hall – considered it an honour to welcome visitors to the launch of the exhibition.
She told health workers present: “This exhibition pays tribute to what was a health revolution, and we pay homage to this national institution everybody knows affectionately as the NHS.
“It might be the envy of the world, but this is Warrington’s own history, and many of you have participated in that change and seen it first-hand. All of you have been part of that revolution.”
The display takes visitors on a unique journey to the past, inviting them to discover more about the changing face of the NHS from its inception in 1948 right through to the present day, examining a range of topics such as the availability of medical provisions and knowledge, the nature of health care roles, changes in technology, and major medical milestones that have revolutionised the service.
Staff at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery worked hand-in-hand with health care representatives from across the area, including Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Hollins Park Hospital, Winwick, and the NHS Retirement Fellowship, to uncover first-hand accounts from people who have worked for the NHS over the past 70 years.
A key feature of the exhibition is a memories wall, which not only presents the stories of people who worked for local NHS services during this time, but also invites visitors to contribute their own memories.
Hannah White, collections assistant at the museum, co-ordinated the project and said: “Over its 70 years, the NHS has changed dramatically both in what it provides and to whom it provides.
On July 5 the organisation is celebrating its 70th birthday and we thought that this would be a great opportunity to hold an exhibition
through which visitors can be taken on a journey through the history of this unique service.
The Health Revolution is on at Warrington Museum and Art Gallery until Saturday July 7.
