WARRINGTON suffered their most embarrassing defeat of the season when they went down by eight wickets in their Chapel Press Cheshire County League game at Cheadle.
Batting first they were tumbled out for a meagre 40 with no batsman managing to cope with good bowling on a wicket which favoured the bowlers.
The home side lost two wickets but never looked in any danger as they raced to 43-2 in just 10 overs.
Grappenhall also lost – but their match against Cheadle Hulme at Broad Lane was a much closer affair and in fact resulted in them losing only two points.
Richard Green hit a fine 93 and Ian Wright 67 as Grappenhall posted 219-4. Cameron Park contributed a swift, unbeaten 38.
Grappenhall’s bowling lacked discipline and penetration and this enabled the visitors, who were behind the clock at one stage, to reach their target for the loss of eight wickets in the final over. Grappenhall skipper Steve Titchard took 4-54.
Grappenhall 2nd’s game was cancelled and the 3rd XI suffered an eight wicket defeat at Poynton. Grappenhall batted first and were dismissed for 65 on a wicket which favoured the bowlers. Poynton raced to 40 without loss but then Paul Tyerman picked up two quick wickets to revive Grappenhall’s hopes. But it was all in vain and the home side claimed the points at 66-2.
But the 3rd XI was in action again over the weekend and this time chalked up a six wicket victory against Bowdon at Broad Lane.
Bowdon were held to 124, young spinner Adam Roylance taking 4-7 and Sam Guest bowling tidily for 2-16.
Grappenhall replied with opener Les Connolly taking 13 from the first over before falling and his fellow opener Mark Tyerman hitting 68 as the side coasted to 128-4.
In the Cheshire Alliance, Appleton were held to a draw by Chelford after declaring on 180-4, Anthony Hurst 51 and Richard Clarke 76 not out. Chelford were hanging on at 157-9 at the close after Danny Oliver had taken 5-26 and Tom Lucas 3-48.
Appleton 3rd were tumbled out for 48 by Heaton Mersey Village – Dave Darbyshire scoring 21 of them. Village coasted to victory for the loss of one wicket.
Appleton 4th travelled to Frodsham where they batted first and reached 117, Stuart McIntosh hitting 37 and John Ormston 47. Frodsham triumphed in a nail-biting finish with 118-9, despite good bowling by Amir Rashid, 4-40 and Roger Cawthorne, 5-58.
Rylands suffered a heavy defeat at The Groves, on the Wirral. The home side posted 131-9, with Adam Peters taking 4-39 and Sean Malone 2-16. But when Rylands batted only Ian Mason, 34 and Eddie Platt, 14 reached double figures and the side slumped from 43-1 to 73 all out – six batsmen being out for a duck!
Rylands 2nd won convincingly against Wirral. Batting first, Rylands reached 193-9, Steve Howarth hitting 65 and Kenny Jarvis 55. Wirral were dismissed for 97.
Glazebury’s game at Hurst Lane was abandoned, but Glazebury 2nd travelled to Eastham and Bromborough and enjoyed a good win.
Glazebury batted first and hit 179-8, Michael Nutkins hitting 32 and Dave Acton 28. Eastham were dismissed for 87 with Paul Charlton taking 4-9 and Chris Ayre, Jason Butterworth and Julian May picking up two wickets each.
Glazebury 3rd, who play in the West Lancs League, went down by seven wickets against Earlestown.
Batting first at Hurst Lane, Glazebury were dismissed for just 42, Brendan Morris with 18 not out being the only batsman to reach double figures. The visitors coasted to 48-3.
