Titchard innings spurs victory

THE weather took its toll on weekend cricket in the Warrington area – but some matches were played and in the Chapel Press Cheshire County League, Grappenhall earned a three wicket victory at Christleton.
Skipper Steve Titchard scored a fine, unbeaten 73 as “Grappers” battled hard on a slow pitch and eventually reached victory with just an over to spare.
The home side batted first and reached 185-3, with Gary Burns, Alan Tetlow and Ian Hall taking a wicket each.
Will Sharp supported the skipper with a useful 56.
Grappenhall 2nd’s game against Middlewich was lost to the weather, as was Warrington’s 1st XI game with Urmston.
Warrington 4th were tumbled out for 68 against Neston, who replied with 70-2.
In the Cheshire County League veterans league, Warrington Over 40s held Alderly Edge to 95-9 and earned an eight wicket victory with 96-2.
Grappenhall Over 40s, depleted by injury were defeated by Nantwich who scored 162-6 and then held Grappenhall to 114-7.
But on Wednesday, Grappenhall Over 40s were almost certainly robbed of victory by the weather when they entertained the Mobberley veterans at Broad Lane.
On losing the toss, Grappenhall were asked to bowl on a wicket helpful to slow bowlers.
Mobberley started well, taking 24 from the first four overs. But the introduction of Tetlow, who slowed his pace to suit the wicket, made runs hard to come by. All the bowlers bowled well, supported by good fielding, especially Nicholson who took a spectacular one handed full-length catch.
Mobberley finished on 95-7 – a target well within Grappenhall’s reach.
With the light fading, Grappenhall’s openers set about the bowling and had reached 35-0 in seven overs when the rain came and match was abandoned. Connolly was 15 not out and Nicholson 19 not out.
In the Cheshire Alliance, Rylands were denied victory by Wilmslow Wayfarers who were hanging on by the skin of their teeth at the close.
Rylands batted first and reached 146-9, Eddie Platt top scoring with a fine 57, Peter Knowles hitting 23 and Richard Buck 28.
Wayfarers were 111-9 at the close, Alan Harrison taking 5-28 and Sean Malone taking 3-37.
David Acton hit a superb, unbeaten century as Glazebury earned a draw at Ellesmere Port.
The home side had declared on 221-4 – skipper Chris Lord picking up 2-38 for Glazebury and Acton taking 2-42.
Acton opened the batting for Glazebury and was still there at the close on 100 not out as Glazebury finished on 202-4. He was well supported by Lord, 29 and Simon Green, 37.
Glazebury 2nd’s game was lost to the weather.

Women’s cricket
In the Cheshire Women’s Cricket League 20Twenty contest, Appleton Tigers gave Hawarden Park a severe mauling. Appleton batted first and reached 111-4, Emma Barlow and Natalie Lyons each hitting unbeaten 25s.
The home side were tumbled out for 36, Jenny Clarke taking 3-18, Natalie Long 2-0 and Jess Lewis 2-11.
