Celebrating 'phone book recycling

SCHOOLS across Warrington are celebrating their success at recycling telephone directories in the Yellow Woods Challenge.
Yellow Pages, in partnership with the Woodland Trust and the borough council, awards cash prizes to the schools which recycle the most old Yellow Pages directories.
Grappenhall Hall School was the Gold Oak award winner and received £300 for recycling an average of 3.37 directories per pupil.
St Monica’s RC Primary won the Silver Birch award and £200 while Burtonwood Primary School carried off the £100 Bronze Beech award as well as a £100 bonus prize from Yellow Pages for the Most Improved School.
For every pound given to schools, Yellow Pages have matched in donations to the Woodland Trust – the UK’s leading woodland conservation charity.
Sue East, corporate fundraiser from the Trust said: “The money from the Yellow Woods Challenge supports our Tree For All campaign, which aims to plant 12 million native trees – that’s one for every child in the UK.”
The top six schools have also won a year’s free membership to the Trust’s “Nature Detectives Club” courtesy of Yellow Pages. Club members receive regular educational materials to make learning about nature fun throughout the year.
Paula Darlington, head of environmental management at the borough council said: “I’d like to congratulate all the winning schools and say ‘Thank you’ to everyone who made a contribution to the environment by recycling their old Yellow Pages directory.”
The Challenge resulted in a total of 5,148 old directories being recycled via the council’s kerbside scheme.
Warrington schools must now wait until November to find out how their directory recycling scores compare with other schools taking part in the Yellow Woods Challenge across the country. The national recycling champions will win £1,000 from Yellow Pages.
