Stranger danger warning

PEOPLE in Warrington are being warned not to let strangers into their homes following a spate of distraction burglaries.
Elderly and vulnerable residents are being advised to be extra vigilant.
Police say burglaries occur when an offender gains entry to a home by pretending to be an “official” – who would normally be allowed into the premises – with the intention of stealing.
This includes bogus officials, often claiming to be from a utility company or other official body, and rogue traders who increase initial charges or carry out poor quality or no work.
During the past two months there have been 11 such incidents in Warrington- mostly involving an elderly or vulnerable person being duped.
Detective Inspector Matt Durcan said: “We are urging residents – especially the elderly and vulnerable – to be extra vigilant when answering the door to any unexpected callers.
“They should always use a door chain when answering the door and should always ask for – and check – the identification of people claiming to be working for a company or organisation.”
DI Durcan said if people are still unsure they should ask the caller to wait while they call the company – they should look up the number not rely on any number the caller gives them, as this could be false.
He advises people to keep their front and back doors locked, and not to keep large amounts of money at home.
People should be wary of unexpected callers, use a door chain when answering the door and always check the caller’s identity. If they were still concerned residents should call the police.
People are also asked to keep an eye on elderly or vulnerable neighbours.
DI Durcan said: “We work closely with agencies including Trading Standards to identify and take action against offenders. All agencies are committed to tackling this type of crime and we will continue doing all we can to reduce future incidents. But we also need the support of local people.
“Do not be afraid to call us if you think a neighbour is being targeted in this way. The more information we have, the better we are able to build evidence and take action against those responsible.”
Anyone with information about doorstep crime or bogus callers should contact Cheshire Police on 0845 458 0000, or anonymously on Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
