Bewsey Hall inquiry opens today

THE public inquiry to decide the fate of Warrington’s historic Bewsey Old Hall opens today.
Urban renewal specialists Urban Splash are appealing against the borough council’s refusal to grant permission for a rescue plan which involves converting the Grade 2 listed building into apartments and building 48 more apartments in the grounds.
The hearing at the Halliwell Jones Stadium starts at 10am and is expected to last two days. Anyone who wishes to speak at the inquiry should register before 9.30am.
Members of the council’s development control committee turned down the proposals last year – against the advice of planning officers.
There had been strong objections from neighbours, councillors and local organisations, who claimed there would be a loss of green space, increased traffic congestion and a disregard for the heritage site, should the plans be given the green light.
Bewsey Old Hall is arguably Warrington’s most historic building. But despite various attempts over the years to bring it back into use, it stands virtually unused and in a deteriorating condition.
Objectors to the current proposal would prefer to see the building preserved for community use.
The hall was originally built by William Fitz Almeric le Boteler and was home to the Lords of Warrington from the 13th Century.
The manor house – described as Warrington’s “hidden gem” was lost in a gambling debt 700 years ago by the Boteler family.
It is reputed to be haunted and in 1997 a campaign was launched to turn it into a tourist attraction.
Urban Splash has twice submitted proposals for redevelopment of the hall and grounds.
Among the objectors are Penketh Parish Council who want to see the hall preserved as a visitor centre.
