A TOTAL of 94 candidates will be fighting for the North West’s eight seats on the European Parliament on June 4 – including two from Warrington.
They are veteran Labour MEP Brian Simpson, from Great Sankey, and retired engineer William Aitken Brotherston, of Lymm, who is standing for The Jury Team, which says it stands for democracy, accountability and transparency.
Twelve parties and one individual candidate are contesting the elections in the region.
More than five million people across the region will have the opportunity to vote – subject to them being on the electoral register.
Warrington residents are being reminded they have until Tuesday May 19 to ensure they are on the register – and also that they are not automatically on the register because they pay council tax or have other dealings with the borough council. Anyone who wants to check if they are already on the register or
request an application form to join the list should call 01925 443322. Applications must be received by 5pm on Tuesday May 19 to be eligible to vote in the elections.
Anyone who is on the electoral register can choose to vote by post. Applications for a postal vote must also be received by no later than 5pm on May 19.
European Parliamentary Elections take place every five years. Voting is by a proportional representation system which will use a percentage of the votes cast for each party across the region to determine how many seats are allocated to them.
The 12 parties seeking seats in the North West, with the number of candidates they are fielding, are, in alphabetical order: British National Party (8), Christian Party (8), Conservatives (8), English Democrats (8), Jury Team (6), Liberal Democrats (8), No2EU:Yes to Democracy(8), Pro Democracy:Libertus.eu (7), Socialist Labour Party (8), Green Party (8), Labour (8), United Kingdom Independence Party (8).
The lone Independent is Francis Apaloo.
