Name the mud monster

WORKERS at Warrington’s Long Lane Garden Centre have created an impressive mud sculpture of a giant’s head in its sensory garden.
But the “mud monster” has no name and now the centre is holding a competition, open to children under the age of 11 who visit the centre, to find a name.
Kath Jones, project co-ordinator at the award-winning centre, said: “The sculpture is the result of hard work put in by workers here and we are delighted with the results and want as many people as possible to come and see what we have created.”
Youngsters are invited to visit the garden centre at Warrington Business Park, Long Lane, to do a drawing of the monster and give him a name. The lucky winner will receive a family hamper of goodies for the garden.
Jean Rowlinson a tutor at the centre co-ordinated the sculpture after seeing a similar mud sculpture at the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall.
Jean said “The moss and grasses will become more established over the coming weeks and everyone is welcome to come and see our efforts so far.”
Long Lane Garden Centre, a charity which supports adults with learning or physical difficulties, is set in the heart of the community. Opened in September 2007, the project sells plants, shrubs, hanging baskets and local produce; it also has a fruit and vegetable van that goes out in the local community attending luncheon clubs, residential homes and children’s nurseries.
The workers make wooden planters and bird boxes which are also for sale.
The team also grows many plants on site helping to keep prices down.
Every day a team of 20 staff, workers and volunteers work to make the garden centre a success.
Kath said: “We are always grateful of any volunteer help with gardening, woodwork, computers, helping with our sales, fundraising – the list is endless!”
