FAMILIES across Warrington have the chance to get fit and explore nature this spring thanks to a festival of guided woodland walks coming to the borough throughout May.
“Walk in the Woods month in The Mersey Forest” features a range of free local countryside walks suitable for all ages and fitness levels, from an early morning bird walk at Risley Moss Local Nature Reserve to health walks at Sankey Valley Park.
The walks festival in Warrington is part of the Tree Council’s national “Walk in the Woods” month, with thousands of people due to take part in more than 100 guided walks taking place across the country. The local events programme has been co-ordinated by The Mersey Forest, the growing network of woodlands and green spaces being developed across Merseyside and North Cheshire.
Paul Nolan, director of The Mersey Forest, said: “Walk in the Woods month is a great chance for people to get some fresh air and enjoy nature at one of the most beautiful times of the year. There’s lots going on in Warrington and beyond, so we’d encourage everyone to take a look at what’s on and get involved.”
The full programme of walks is available at merseyforest.org.uk/walkinthewoods or by calling 01925 816217, with the events in Warrington organised by the borough council, the Risley Moss Action Group and NHS Warrington.
As well as the guided walks taking place in May, nature lovers can keep exploring the local area at their leisure all summer long thanks to free maps and walk direction packs available from another website, www.discoverthemerseyforest.co.uk. As well as walking routes, there are also details of the best places for cycling and horse riding, as well as the lowdown on family events taking place across the region.
