SWIMMER Steve Deakin has joined the campaign for children’s fitness in Warrington.
Steve, who was brought up in Whitecross and who was recently awarded the MBE, is the first ever patron of Fit Kidz, a local sports charity for 5-17 year olds.
He will be participating in fundraising events and helping to spread the word about the positive work going on in the town.
Fit Kidz provides sports and informal education activities for young people, including football, rugby, swimming, street dance, netball and badminton. During school holidays, activities include residential trips and workshops tackling issues such as alcohol abuse, drugs, anti social behaviour and health and fitness.
The current captain of the England transplant swimming team, Steve Deakin’s achievements include winning two world bronze medals in Thailand 2007, swimming the Channel twice, completing the ‘Escape from Alcatraz’ triathlon and captaining the GB transplant swim team.
He also chairs the Alder Hey Hospital children’s transplant sports team and manages the Liverpool transplant sports team.
Fit Kidz relies on the involvement and support of the local community and the tireless work of volunteers means that all activities are free – visit www.fitkidzwarrington.com.
