AN elderly woman was evacuated from her home at Warrington following a flooding incident.
A surge in the mains is believed to have caused a header tank in the loft at the bungalow in Winstanley Close, Hood Manor to overflow, sending gallons of water cascading into the living room below.
About two square metres of ceiling collapsed and there was extensive damage to carpets and other property.
Firefighters were called to the scene and assisted the 75-year-old occupant, placing her temporarily in a Red Cross victim support vehicle and later arranging for housing association officials to find her alternative accommodation.
A Fire Service spokesman said: “We managed to isolate a pipe in the loft and stop the flow of water.
“We understand a number of other homes suffered problems and that some overflow pipes were operating so we think there was a surge in the mains which caused the problem.”
It is understood a water main burst was later reported in the Whittle Hall area.
