Work to start on safeguarding town’s Cenotaph

WORK to stabilise the riverbank around Warrington Cenotaph is due to start next week.

It will be completed in time for Remembrance Day 2019 – but the Cenotaph, at Bridge Foot, will be fully accessible for next year’s Remembrance Day.

After discovering damage to the river embankment, close to the memorial, Warrington Borough Council consulted stakeholders on different options for the memorial – including relocating to another site in the town centre.

The majority of people who responded were in favour of retaining the Cenotaph in its current location and the council now plans to stabilise the river bank to protect and safeguard the Cenotaph and the surrounding structures. Access for disabled people will also be improved.

The next steps are to carry out ground investigations so that the structural design work can start. This will entail contractors drilling exploratory boreholes into the edge of the river bank, where the new river wall will be constructed.

The Cenotaph and the memorial walls will not be affected by this work. The work should take around five days in total, provisionally starting on site the week commencing next Monday, subject to weather conditions.

The council has consulted with the War Graves Commission before deciding to start the work.

  1. Good news that work to address the problems there are to start next week. The site is an important reminder and memorial to all the brave souls named there who sadly lost their lives for us all 🙁
I’m so glad the Council are doing the repairs and changes for access that are necessary rather than simply moving it somewhere else. The families of those killed in WW1 and the Council of the day and the people of Warrington all chose that spot for it all those years ago for a reason so we should respect that too and it should stay in it’s prominent chosen place to be seen every day by all who pass by it.
