WARRINGTON’S Odeon Cinema has won a lengthy planning battle over 11 air conditioning units on its roof.
But a planning inspector has ruled that the Westbrook cinema must screen the units to minimise a harmful visual impact.
The borough council imposed conditions on the original planning application after six units had been erected without planning permission.
Councillors were worried at the impact on the appearance of the building and a possible noise nuisance for nearby residents.
They called for screening to hide the units and for all 11 to be acoustically insulated.
The Odeon appealed against the three conditions and the inspector has agreed that the units do not need acoustic insulation.
But he has backed the council on the visual screening.
He says the increased height of the air conditioning units, compared to those they have replaced, has a markedly worse effect on the appearance of the building giving a far more intrusive impact of a wide area – especially from ground level.
A council spokesman said: “Our stance on the visual impact of the units has been vindicated.”
