Julie carries on flying the flag at Warrington Cenotaph

GIANT poppies and a new Union flag are now proudly on display at Warrington Cenotaph thanks to the efforts of local campaigner Julie Francis.

Julie, who this year was assisted by volunteers Cath Forester, Diane Gandy, Ann Barnes and John Gregson, carried out the work at the weekend.

Local resident Julie, who lives on nearby Chester Road and successfully campaigned for Warrington Borough Council to carry out improvements to the cenotaph on Bridgefoot, ensured the items were in place in time for Remembrance Day and the annual Remembrance Day service.

Julie, who still feels the council should be doing more to honour those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, will also be ensuring wreaths and displays that appear at the cenotaph go to good homes after the event.

She said: “I make sure each flag, once I have a new one, is donated to a new home and the wreaths are also to re-used to make displays – there is no waste on my watch.”

The large Poppies first appeared last year and have been carefully kept in storage with two new additions this year, making a total of 10.
