MP Helen Jones is urging people to learn more about how petitions to the UK Parliament work.
The Warrington North MP is chairman of the House of Commons Petitions Select Committee – the committee which allows the public to raise issues directly with MPs and get them debated.
She said: “My committee has pioneered new ways of working with voters and allowing them to get their voices heard, including web forums, Twitter chats and informal roundtables with MPs.
“The free online course ‘UK Parliament Explored: Petitions’ will allow people to find out about the possible impacts and outcomes petitions can have and the variety of themes and issues that engaged people with petitions in the last Parliament. In addition, those interested will be able to discuss what makes a petition successful, explore case studies of petitions which have achieved change and gain a greater understanding of the role of the Petitions Select Committee.“
The course – UK Parliament Explored: Petitions – is run by Future Learn, a digital education platform founded in December 2012. The company is wholly owned by the Open University.
People can sign up to the course which is launched on November 13 at http://goo.gl/vm7jgk or via www.futurelearn.com
