WARRINGTON South MP Faisal Rashid says it is “totally unacceptable” that many young people are not able to have stable, affordable homes.”
The MP was speaking after meeting children from the Children’s Rights Alliance for England (CRAE) at Westminister.
Many of the youngsters had experienced homelessness or lived in temporary housing, such as bed and breakfast accommodation
Mr Rashid said the number of families living in temporary accommodation had more than doubled in three years and more than a third of these families lived in bed and breakfast accommodation for longer than six weeks. It was well known that growing up in these environments have a detrimental impact on a child’s development.
CRAE went to Parliament to raise awareness of this issue and campaign for better long term, affordable housing for families.
After the event, Mr Rashid said: “I am very grateful to the children and young people for taking the time to share their personal stories so eloquently and so passionately and I absolutely will be supporting this cause moving forwards.
“It is totally unacceptable that so many young people do not have long-term, stable, affordable homes. Every child deserves a happy and safe home, we must do more to work towards this.”
