Council says: Put that light out

COUNCIL chiefs at Warrington are urging residents to turn off their lights for “earth hour” tonight – to draw attention to the need to combat climate change.
Candlelit dinner parties, ghost stories for children told by torchlight or murder mystery games in the dark are all suggested as ways of saving energy on the last night before the clocks alter
The initiative is linked to the World Wildlife Fund’s appeal to the world to turn off its lights for “earth hour.”
A billion people are expected to sign up worldwide and the borough council is encouraging Warrington people to take part.
The lights-out initiative marks the start of WWF’s “Global Deal” campaign to convince governments to agree to effective action on climate change. The United Nation’s climate change summit meets later this year and the event is a great way to highlight that the world wants to see action on green issues, the council believes.
Some 538 cities worldwide are already signed up to take part as well as some iconic landmarks in Britain including the Forth Bridge and the Millennium Stadium who will turn off their lights.
The council had already introduced a number of initiatives to reduce the carbon footprint of council staff, local business and the wider local community.
Coun Alan Litton, executive member for environment services said: “The council is taking action to reduce its own carbon footprint but we must all pull together and act as a community to tackle climate change in Warrington as a whole.
“This is a really fun start to get you and your friends thinking about climate change, reducing carbon emissions and reducing your energy bills at the same time.”
