Loan shark jailed indefinitely

A LOAN shark who threatened his victims with violence when they could not meet their payments, was sentenced to an indefinite term of imprisonment at Warrington Crown Court.
Paul Nicholson, aged 39, (pictured) was convicted of rape, 14 counts of blackmail, assault, acquiring criminal property and illegal money lending, following a trial in February.
Nicholson’s sentence was given to him under the Imprisonment for Public Protection Rules which means his sentence has no maximum tariff. Had Nicholson, described by the Judge as being “a danger to the public” been sentenced individually for the offences for which he was convicted, he would have been jailed for a total of 15 years.
His partner Tracey Rogers, aged 36 who was convicted of blackmail and illegal money lending, was jailed for four years.
Detective Inspector Giles Orton, head of the Cheshire Constabulary Economic Crime Unit said: “During the trial of Paul Nicholson and Tracey Rogers, the jury has heard how since 2006, Paul Nicholson has used threats, personal violence and sexual impropriety in the course of his illegal money lending. Nicholson argued that his business, Falcon Securities, had offered a legitimate service to the community. In fact the business operated through a climate of fear where clients were assaulted, threatened, and in one instance, subjected to serious sexual assault.
“This custodial sentence sends out a clear message to anyone involved in illegal money lending, and serves to reassure the public that such activity will not be tolerated. The current economic downturn may see more people consider approaching money lending firms. My advice would be to think very carefully as to where you place your trust, and if necessary, take advice from an authoritative source such as Trading Standards.
“We have heard in court the disturbing tales of people who were threatened and harmed by Paul Nicholson. This is sadly, typical of the loan shark who is self-interested and motivated only by self gain. Similarly, the experience of my team and that of Trading Standards confirms that many loan sharks also engage in crimes other than illegal money lending – such as intimidation and violence, counterfeit goods and drugs.”
