FIVE founder members were present when Newchurch Women’s Institute held its 50th anniversary meeting.
The five – who were presented with flowers – were Dorothy Fairhurst, Mabel France, Nancy Gowans, Paddy Poulter, and Rita Walker – and together with other members they tucked into a special birthday cake decorated by Doreen Procter.
Aileen Paterson provided a basket of daffodils, which she donated to the raffle and the tea hostesses were Nora Cooper and Edna Cutts.
Speaker Derek Thompson spoke about “The Grand National”. He gave an amusing account of his busy life as Aintree Stable Manager and all the well-known people he meets. He showed off a full set of jockey clothing – tights, breeches, padded waistcoat, light-weight boots and beautiful “silk” jacket and caps.
He also had light-weight saddles and lead-weighted ones for handicaps and explained how jockey’s whips are designed to make a loud crack to urge the horses on, not to hurt them. Members also learned about the frightening diet programmes followed by riders to keep as light as possible.
