A MOTORIST is in hospital after a crash on the motorway near Warrington early today.
His car plunged off the M62, between Warrington and Widnes, carried down an embankment, collided with a tree and ended up in a ditch.
The driver was trapped in the wrecked vehicle and fire crews from Warrington had to use cutting gear to release him.
It took 45 minutes to extricate him from the wreckage.
The injured man was taken to Whison Hospital where his condition was said to be “critical but stable.”
Two lanes of the motorway were closed during the rescue.
It is not clear if another vehicle was involved in the crash. A heavy lorry was parked on the hard shoulder nearby and police are investigating.
