Anger over incinerator leak

THE leader of Warrington Borough Council has lashed out after a leaked email suggested an incinerator was to be built on the multi million £ Omega development site.
Coun Ian Marks says although the borough council has unanimously agreed to press ahead with an “energy from waste” facility, no decision has been made on its location.
There are several potential sites that meet the criteria across the borough, he says.
Coun Marks said: “The position is very clear. After extensive public consultation and the unanimous backing of the whole council, we agreed our waste strategy which aims to minimise the amount of waste we produce, maximise recycling, reduce the amount of waste going to landfill and use the residual waste that can’t be recycled to produce energy.
“To achieve this final point, the strategy suggests developing an ‘energy from waste’ facility to use Warrington’s waste – and only Warrington’s waste – as a fuel to produce heat and power. This is a sensible and sustainable solution to the problem of reducing our landfill.
“An energy from waste facility needs to be associated with a major development site that could make use of the heat and power it produces. There are a number of potential locations that would meet the criteria but it is early days and we have made no decisions.
The high quality business location we’ve always planned for Omega could benefit from heat and power provided by a modern, non-polluting facility but equally, so could a number of other potential sites.
“I repeat that absolutely no decision has been made. Any consideration of locations would be subject to public consultation at the appropriate time. We remain committed to the future of Omega as a high quality and sustainable development and ensuring that Warrington capitalises on all the opportunities such a significant site offers.”
