Titan prison decision is worrying

THE Government’s decision to press ahead with plans for a giant Titan Prison in Wales is “worrying” for Warrington, according to a local campaigner.
Liberal Democrat councillor Jo Crotty – Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South – has condemned the decision.
She said: “The Government has made a terrible decision to go ahead with plans for a Titan prison in Wales.
“Concern is mounting in Warrington. They are taking us down a road towards bigger and bigger prisons that do nothing to deter crime and do nothing to reduce re-offending.
“Labour is simply mistaken if they think this is the path towards a safer Britain. It is not. It is posturing by a political party which wants to appear tough on crime but does not have the intelligence and the will to make the right decisions that would actually make Britain safer and make Britons feel more secure.”
The Bewsey and Whitecross councillor has campaigned fiercely against a Titan Prison on the Omega development site in Warrington.
She said: “The announcement is especially worrying for residents of Warrington. We know our own Omega site is under consideration for a Titan prison and we must take the Government’s actions as a sign they are intent on building these prisons regardless.
“The decision does not just affect Warrington, however. I am strongly opposed to the building of Titan prisons anywhere. There is strong evidence against their ability to rehabilitate offenders, or to secure the safety of staff and prisoners alike.”
Coun Crotty said every community should be concerned about Labour’s mega-prison programme.
She added: “I hope to make it Liberal Democrat national policy to oppose the building of Titan prisons anywhere in our country.”
