TRADERS at Warrington Market are celebrating after it was named the country’s best indoor market at a national event.
The accolade was given at the National Conference of Market Operators.Market manager Stephen Pickering said: “Markets are about people, the traders and the customers, and this award is acknowledgement on a national scale for all the efforts made by our traders to compete against the ever increasing retail competition.”
Coun Bob Barr, the borough council’s executive member for planning, regeneration and housing, said: “This award is testament to all the hard work and dedication of our local traders to embrace new ideas and try to move forward in the difficult trading conditions of late.”
Peter Reardon, whose family has run a fish stall in the market for four generations, said: “It is great to win the prize but anyone who has spent any time here already knows what a fantastic place it is.
“My family have worked here since 1850 and I grew up in the market. I still think when I’m opening up first thing in the morning, how happy I am to be here!”
Warrington Market’s origins date back more than 750 years. It is the largest indoor market in the North West and more than 600 people work there.
