Disabled in work could double

THE number of disabled people in employment in Warrington could double as a result of increased funding for the Government’s “Access to Work” scheme.
This is the prediction of Warrington North MP Helen Jones, following the announcement that funding for things like sign language interpreters, wheelchair lifts, specialised equipment and transport costs is to be doubled.
Currently, around 3,700 disabled people in the North West have been helped in to work through the scheme – but Ms Jones believes the number could now double.
She is calling on employers in Warrington to match the Government’s commitment by opening up more opportunities for disabled people.
Ms Jones said: “This new funding will help put disabled people here in Warrington in control of their own lives.
“The power of Access to Work is simple. It lets disabled people do work of their choice which they otherwise could not do and gives them control over the support they receive.
“The Government will pay for the specialist help that disabled people need. Now I want local employers to do their bit by making sure jobs are offered to disabled people.”
The scheme has received praise from a number of charities, including SCOPE, The Royal National Institute for Blind People, Leonard Cheshire Disability and Royal National institute for Deaf People.
