CULTURE and Sports Secretary Andy Burnham dropped in on a top Warrington sports club to see for himself the club’s vision for the future.
The Leigh MP was accompanied by Warrington South MP Helen Southworth when he visited Crosfields Sports Club.
Crosfields have 24 football and 15 rugby teams, caters for all age groups and is hoping to build new facilities, including pitches and a clubhouse, so it can better serve the local community.
The visit was aimed at getting all the stakeholders involved in the club’s proposals, including representatives of local residents associations and local schools and young players and their coaches, together with the Minister and senior representatives of the Football Foundation and other sports funding bodies.
Mrs Southworth said: “I was really pleased that the Sports Minster came to Warrington to see the scale of ambition to improve local sports facilities. Crosfields are keen to improve their on-site facilities so that they can offer the wider community more opportunities to get involved in sporting and social activities.
“I share their commitment to widening access to sports. It is really important that we do all we can to encourage children and young people to get active. We have excellent sports clubs locally creating lots of opportunities for people to get involved. I am always happy to support local clubs.
“This was a good opportunity to showcase local sport and I know the Minister was impressed by what he saw”.
