WARRINGTON Town produced one of the upsets of the season with a stunning 2-3 victory at high-flying promotion chasing Lancaster City last night.
The victory gave Town three precious points and eased any relegation fears.
Warrington handed debuts to four players, after the recent appointment of former Town player Joey Dunn, as caretaker manager following Paul Moore’s resignation last week.
The game burst into life after 20 minutes when recent signing Phil Howard saw his effort deflected wide and then blasting over the bar, after good work by strike partnert Chris Amadi. Town were on top and went close again through livewire winger and the club’s leading goal scorer Chris Gahgan, saw his piledriver tipped over the bar.
Town took the lead from the resulting corner when captain Anthony Kielty’s bullet header found the net. Two minutes later, the home side equalised, when a well worked free kick was finished by Lennie Reid to make it 1-1 at the break.
The second half started with defences on top with the game being played mainly in midfield. The first chance fell to Reid, who saw his shot saved by debutant keeper Aaron Grundy, Howard (pictured right) went close once again, seeing his shot blocked after a long run by striker Chris Amadi. Town were now in control of the game and went close shortly afterwards when debutant centre back Paul Bowes saw his header go over the bar and Howard went close again when his overhead kick went over the bar.
Town deservedly took the lead in the 81st minute when Phil Hadland (pictured top) was on hand to poke home from inside the six yard box. Town sewed the game up in the 90th minute, when Chris Gahgan was on hand to slot the ball home after good team work. Deep into the four minutes of injury time, the home side pulled a goal back, when Paul Osborne pounded a rebound home.
Warrington now entertain Newcastle Blue Star at Cantilever Park this Saturday, kick off 3pm.
