THE multi-million plan for a super new “sports village” at Warrington’s Orford Park should be used to create local jobs, according to an MP.
Warrington North MP Helen Jones (pictured) has called on Warrington Borough Council and NHS Warrington – formerly Warrington PCT – to ensure that the millions of pounds the government is investing in the project is used to create local jobs.
She said: “The recent confirmation that the Orford Project would go ahead was really good news. It will bring real employment opportunities to the area.
“I believe that both the borough council and NHS Warrington should use the muscle they have to ensure that those jobs and apprenticeships go to local people wherever possible.
“I have contacted both organisations and want them to make a commitment to ensuring that firms engaged on this project use local labour and provide apprenticeships for our young people.
“The government is bringing forward spending on major projects like this in order to create jobs. The council and the NHS locally must play their part in making sure local people benefit.”
Coun Ian Marks, leader of the borough council said: “We will certainly be doing everything we can to ensure local people come first in terms of construction jobs.
“The council has a good track record in this respect – when Tesco and Debenham’s came to Warrington we were able to assist in making sure local people got most of the available jobs.”
