Air quality worries outside Warrington’s schools

COUNCILLORS are calling for the monitoring of air quality around Warrington’s schools.

They see a reduction of emissions from idling vehicles around schools could significantly reduce pollution at these sites.

Cllr Linda Dirir (pictured)  is to put a motion to next week’s meeting of Warrington Borough Council, supported by Cllr Rebecca Knowles.

She warns that incidences of asthma in children are increasing and asks that the council fully supports a current national campaign

“SoICanBreathe” (BBC TV)  to reduce  emissions from  idling vehicles including  diesel powered  school buses around  the  school gate.

Cllr Dirir asks that her motion be referred to the council’s Protecting  the Most Vulnerable  Policy Committee  so that it may consider ways that  the council, in order  to reduce  emissions and improve  the  health of children, can effect change in drivers behaviour  by encouraging them  to  turn  their  engines off when  stationary.

This could include working with PCSO`s and liaison with Head teachers, Governing  Bodies and bus contractors, the councillors suggest.
