WARRINGTON North MP Helen Jones is urging schools to start thinking about next Christmas already.
She has written to every school in her constituency encouraging them to take part in the Big Ben 150th anniversary Christmas Card design competition, “Parliament and Big Ben.”
Known across the world as Big Ben, the Clock Tower, the Great Clock and the Great Bell celebrate their 150th anniversary this year.
Prizes will include: Climbing to the top of the ‘Big Ben’ tower; Meeting the Keeper of The Great Clock and the Clock Mechanics; Touring the House of Commons; A Big Ben anniversary gift pack, limited edition badge and certificate.
Prizes will be presented at a reception in the House of Commons and travel costs for competition winners, and one accompanying adult per child will be covered.
All entries must be submitted by schools to their MP’s office for judging by February 28.
A winner and runner-up will be submitted to the Big Ben 150th anniversary team by March 31 for the next judging stage.
Ms Jones said: “Lots of celebrations are planned to mark the 150th anniversary of Big Ben. The Christmas card design competition for schools is just
the start. It is a great way in which to engage positively with our young people, hopefully sparking their interest in our nation’s history and the way we are governed.
“I am sure the competition will inspire young imaginations here in Warrington and there is no reason we cannot produce the overall winner. I hope our schools
will take up the challenge and get involved.”
