Warning over home working scams

HOME working schemes that sound too good to be true probably are – according to Warrington Trading Standards.
Officers say people expecting the schemes to be a good way of generating money should take care.
They say the schemes look “tempting,” offering the chance to earn a lot of money from the comfort of home for relatively little work. Jobs range from putting letters in envelopes to painting miniature figurines, and a payment is made for each completed product.
But officers warn that people may be asked for cash, before any information or materials are provided. Although materials may be provided, the work often turns out to be a “pyramid scheme” and to receive payment the worker must provide details of others who would like to take part.
They say that if there are not enough people to support the scheme indefinitely, only the people who set up the scheme make any money.
Borough council executive member for community services Roy Smith (pictured) said: “I would strongly advise residents not to be drawn into schemes like this.
“They are often aimed at people who can not afford the initial payment, but will send the money over in the hope of making some quick cash. Any legitimate company would not ask for any money in return for gainful employment.”
Anyone who has concerns about the schemes should contact Trading Standards on 08454 040506.
