A candle tribute took place at Warrington Cenotaph on Christmas Eve to all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the fight for world peace and freedom.

Local resident Margaret Shaw, whose late father’s ashes are interred in Oosterbeek war cemetery at Arnhem, helped organise thye event after seeing reports on social media of similar tributes taking place in Holland.

Those who attended along with Margaret included her daughter Heather Shaw, relatives of Daniel Wade who lost his life while serving in Afghanistan, deputy mayor of Warrington Les Morgan and councillors Councillors Hans & Karen Mundry.

Candles were laid in over 250 cemeteries in Holland, while Dutch children also put candles on over 1000 graves in Canada.
