Town welcomes congestion no vote

ABOUT 15,000 Warrington people will save up to £1,200-a-year each as a result of the “no vote” on congestion charging in Manchester, according to a top Tory.
David Mowat, Prospective Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Warrington South, said the result of the Manchester referendum was “excellent news” for Warrington.
He said: “It is estimated that more than 15,000 people travel each day from Warrington into Manchester and they would all have had to pay a fee of up to £5 a day.
“The charge was rejected by all the Manchester Boroughs with the overall “no vote” being a whopping 79 per cent of those who took part.
“It was not acceptable that so many people from Warrington would have had to pay this without having the chance to vote. There were no substantive public transport upgrades being proposed for commuters from the town. The environmental benefits of the scheme were weak and basically this was an attempt at yet another Labour stealth tax.
“In total we collected more than 2,000 signatures from local residents opposed to the charge and I must have received 700 letters and emails on this subject. This result is excellent news for those who have no alternative but to drive into the city each day.”
All the 10 boroughs in Greater Manchester voted against the charge. Overall, 812,815 people voted “no” while 21.2 voted “yes.”
