WINTER is on its way to Warrington – in fact it seems to have started a bit early this year.

But borough council chiefs say they are well prepared for the cold weather.

Cllr Hans Mundry, lead member for transport, said: “Our gritting service is on constant standby from November to March to make sure that we can keep Warrington moving, even in the harshest conditions.

“It’s vital for the main routes to be usable and the work of our highways teams makes sure this is possible – with a lot of forward planning and working all hours of the day and night.”

On average during the winter season,  the council sends out its five gritters on 46 occasions – these can be in reaction to weather forecasts or to ice and snow.

The gritting vehicles will cover 19,872 km and grit 14,398km of the highway network, each gritting operation takes around three and a half hours depending on traffic. The average amount of salt spread during a normal season is 17,000 tonnes.

In addition, the borough council and the parish councils have 192 grit bins across the borough.
