Warrington will remember the fallen

WARRINGTON will remember those who have fallen in war tomorrow when thousands of people observe a two minutes silence at 11am.

The silence will mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month – the time when those who were injured or lost their lives fighting for their country, are remembered.

Mayor Cllr Faisal Rashid will join clergy and community leaders for the event at the Old Market Place, Golden Square, from 10.45am. Following the 11am silence, there will be a prayer, reflection and hymn, led by the Rector of Warrington, the Rev Paul Wilson
Everyone is welcome to attend the act of remembrance. Staff working in council buildings will also be asked to observe the silence.

On Sunday, the annual Service of Remembrance will be held at Warrington Cenotaph, Bridge Foot.

At 9.50am, a parade, led by 75 Engineers Regiment and including Warrington Pipe Band, will form up at the Town Hall. At 10.15am the parade will depart the Town Hall and at 10.59am proceedings will begin at the cenotaph with the sounding of the “Last Post” and the laying of the first wreath by the Mayor.

At 11am Warrington will observe the national two minutes silence, marked by a Salvation Army bugler. Immediately following the silence, the cenotaph service will commence, led by the Rector.

At about 11.25am the parade will reform and return to the Town Hall’

Mayor Rashid said: “We must never forget the sacrifices made by others during times of conflict. Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day give us all the opportunity to pay tribute to those who have given their lives in the name of freedom.

“I would urge the people of Warrington to join our commemoration events and honour all those who have fallen in war. Wear your poppy with pride, and show your support for the Royal British Legion, who carry out such invaluable work to support our brave service personnel and their families.”

Members of the public who wish to attend the Remembrance Sunday ceremony
are asked to access and exit the Cenotaph via the marked crossing points and arrive by 10.45am, prior to the civic party taking their positions at the cenotaph.

Delays around the Bridge Foot area are expected, as all movement of traffic is stopped around the Cenotaph for the national two minutes silence. Remembrance Sunday services will also take place at a number of villages across the borough.
