Donation funds giant poppies on Warrington Cenotaph

EIGHT large poppies have been placed on Warrington Cenotaph thanks to the generosity of a £100 donation.

Local resident Julie Francis, who successfully campaigned for Warrington Borough Council to carry out improvements to the cenotaph on Bridgefoot, secured the donation from an elderly woman, after the council said there were no funds available to buy large poppies.

Julie, who also campaigned for the Union Jack to be flown at the cenotaph throughout the year, placed the poppies on the cenotaph yesterday (Sunday) in time for Remembrance Day on Friday and next Sunday’s annual Remembrance Day service.

Julie said: “I would like to thank the lady who donated the money enabling me to buy the large poppies. I approached the council to help but they said no funds were available.”

  1. I saw the large poppies there when I drove past and though how lovely they looked. Well done and how lovely of the elderly lady to donate the money to buy them.
Shameful that the council would not donate the £100 towards the purchase of them though, surely they could have afforded that out of their donations funding pot !!
