MP’s praise for “Living Wage” employers

WARRINGTON   North MP Helen Jones has praised employers who have agreed to pay their workers the “Living Wage” – which has just increase by 2.4 per cent to £8.45 an hour.
This is 17 per cent higher than the Government minimum for over 25s which is £7.20 an hour – and nearly 1,000 employers have signed up for it over the past year, taking the number of accredited Living Wage organisations to nearly 3,000.
Ms Jones, a long time supporter of the Living Wave Foundation, said: “ It is great news to see such an increase in the number of businesses, both large and small, committing themselves to paying the real Living Wage. Over 120,000 workers have benefited since the campaign for a real Living Wage began in 2001 but there is much more to be done to persuade those employers not yet in the scheme to join up.
“I very much welcome the announcement of the new rates.  It means someone  working full time will now earn £45 a week more than those on the Government minimum wage.”
Katherine Chapman, director of the Living Wage Foundation said: “The new Living Wage rates bring a welcome pay rise to thousands of workers across the UK.  One in five people earn less than the wage they need to get by. That’s why it’s more important than ever for leading employers to join the growing movement of businesses and organisations that are going further than the government minimum and making sure their employees earn enough to cover the cost of living.  The sheer growth of our movement shows that the Living Wage is good for people and good for business.“
